Future

Soon, the future that has dominated literature and imaginations for decades might actually become a reality.  Apps now exist to facilitate the apparent need of caffeine by the masses.  With the touch of a screen, anyone can order from Starbucks; and ultimately, this reflects the general shift in recent society.  However, while this denotes the increase of technological advances, it also correlates the use of technology to the need of coffee and other temporary energy boosts.  This in turn seems to imply that as technology advances, it saps more and more energy from individuals.  Of course these new conveniences serve to make our lives easier, but maybe it is also causing us to spiral downwards into a never-ending pit of lethargy.  If this is the future that is so desired by today's world, then by all means continue on this path.  However, following the current path, the future might actually be a little bleaker than usually considered.

  1. I was thinking about iRobot when I read this. I thought those people did so much because of technology, but I just realized that the only robot shown doing something was being a maid. Lethargy ahoy!

  2. I think there are multiple reasons for the irony you are discussing. I blame our culture, for one; even though our technology could allow us all to kick back and relax, we are collectively unable to let go of the desire to always be pushing the envelope. Secondly, I suggest that our technology itself may be responsible for our harried lifestyles. Perhaps the advantages our new inventions provide us are outweighed by their demands. Consider, for example, the unwritten social requirement to spend countless hours learning how to use computers and electronics.

  3. Hence, I am a "print" person, nothing gives quite so much satisfaction as picking up a good book! I did say thank you for the books for Christmas right? I am getting ready to read Dorian, I have the time to devote to a good read now! I am quite looking forward to reveling in my own social norm!!
